Missile Defense Agency grants Raytheon high-tech vehicle concept contract.

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency has awarded Raytheon Company a $9.78-million contract for a Multi-Object Kill Vehicle concept capable of neutralizing a threat complex via advanced sensor technology, Raytheon announced Friday in Tucson.

The competitive, cost-plus-fixed-fee contract covers research and development of technology that can destroy several objects within a given threat area using advanced sensor, divert and attitude control and communication concepts.

“We fully support the Missile Defense Agency's goal of increasing the effectiveness and reliability of our homeland defense by exploring a wide range of capabilities against long-range ballistic missiles and using proven technologies combined with innovative designs," Dr. Thomas Bussing, vice president of Advanced Missile Systems, said.

Raytheon intends to define the concept’s functionality and propose risk mitigation through an analysis of the concept’s technical maturity, along with developing a prototype demonstration program.

With an estimated finish date of 2016, the project will be executed in Tucson and Huntsville, Alabama.

With a 93-year history of innovation, Raytheon provides state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration and other capabilities in the areas of sensing; effects; and command, control, communications and intelligence systems, cybersecurity and a broad range of mission support services.

Raytheon Company, with 2014 sales of $23 billion and 61,000 employees worldwide, specializes in global defense, civil government and cybersecurity markets. The firm is based in Waltham, Massachusetts.
