The Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce has set its legislative goals for 2016.

The Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce recently named its four clearest legislative goals for 2016 - funding for technical education, campaign finance reform, pension reform and a balanced Arizona budget.

The chamber’s public affairs division said it intends to advocate throughout the calendar year on behalf of these matters.

The chamber continues to support funding restoration for Joint Technical Education Districts, which assists students not pursuing a four-year degree with career and trade choices.

“Vocational schools provide students with training to succeed in an ever-changing workplace,” the chamber said, adding that an intended $30 million budget slash beginning in 2017 would hurt the state’s workforce in the long run.

The chamber said that updated campaign finance legislation requires modernization, and it supports Secretary of State Michele Reagan’s actions to simplify election procedures with the understanding that the rights of businesses remain protected.

On public safety pension reform, the chamber backs state Sen. Debbie Lesko’s suggestion to reactivate court-ordered reform dismissals, permit increased employee contributions, redefine plans, reduce costs and lower unfunded liability of Arizona’s Public Safety Personnel Retirement System.

On state budget matters, the chamber will put fiscal responsibility front and center as it lobbies for major tax decreases for the business sector on behalf of its 2,500 member constituents.

“This is not intended as an all-inclusive list, but is aimed at providing some general issues and measures that the chamber’s public affairs team is monitoring early in the 2016 session that supports a healthy business environment in Greater Phoenix,” Chamber Vice President of Public Affairs Mike Huckins said. “The chamber will have a significant presence at the state Capitol to strategically support initiatives needed to facilitate the attraction, retention and expansion of the region’s businesses and economy.”
