With Americans discarding 4.4 pounds of trash daily and recycling only 1.5 pounds, small wonder that Phoenix-based Republic Services has a stake in providing recycling options to millions of industrial, municipal and residential customers nationwide.

The non-hazardous solid waste industry operates in 39 states and Puerto Rico, employing 30,000 workers and repurposing approximately 5.5 million tons of matter annually. Republic strives to strike a balance between operating a viable business and remaining committed to responsible stewardship by protecting our environment.

In the greater metropolitan Phoenix region, Republic runs 178 collection trucks, and nearly one fifth of their vehicles (19 percent) are powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). The firm maintains a fleet of 280 additional units elsewhere in Arizona.

Citing a “Blue Planet sustainability initiative,” Republic aims for lowered vehicle emissions, new landfill strategies and use of renewable energy. It also advocates and models community involvement and supports professional growth among its staff.

To celebrate Earth Day 2016, the company recently offered a bounty of suggestions. Among its many tips were to send e-vites, or electronic invitations, to events to save paper; make a shopping list before obtaining groceries to curb food waste; use washable bottles instead of throwaway materials and invest in CNG or alternative fuel-powered vehicles.

Additionally, Republic advocates shopping for items that reuse existing materials such as thrift or consignment stores; bring your own grocery bags when shopping, and carpool whenever possible to reduce drivers’ carbon footprints. The company recommends using washable dishes instead of disposable paper or plastic ware; and make sure that empty bottles and containers are clean and dry before recycling. Finally, send leftovers home with guests to avoid food waste.

Republic Services belongs to the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce.
