The Arizona Corporation Commission recently approved safety upgrades for two Union Pacific Railroad crossings in Mesa and a crossing in Nogales.

The commission approved an upgrade at the four-quadrant gate system at Dobson Road where it intersects with Main Street and with Broadway in Mesa. New automatic gates with LED flashing lights and bells will be added at each crossing to deter drivers from driving around the gates when they are down. Mesa will pay $561,000 for the improvements, which will be completed within the next 15 months.

Upgrades also will take place at the four-quadrant system at Alma School Road where it intersects with Main Street and Broadway in Mesa. The crossing will be upgraded with new automatic gates with LED flashing lights units on both sides of the outside edges of the roadway and on the raised medians, plus cantilevers at southbound and northbound traffic lanes. This $749,000 project will be paid for with Federal Highway Administration funds. The upgrades will be completed within two years.

Court Street in Nogales will get an automatic gate with LED flashing lights. This $120,000 upgrade will also be paid for with Federal Highway Administration funds.
