The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality is offering tips to make the holiday season less wasteful and more eco-friendly.

The tips include giving gifts in the form of your time or a service, such as pet sitting, cooking, or tutoring.

Adults exchanging gifts may be willing to draw one name rather than buying gifts for every other adult in the family.

If shopping, travel to your destination by sharing a ride with a friend or a family member to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.

Buy local to help support the local economy and your neighbors. Also, consider shopping at antique stores, thrift shops and reuse stores, looking for quality gifts that can be handed down.

If meeting friends or family for dinner, patronize local independent restaurants.

Reuse giftwrap, boxes, ribbons and supplies to cut down on waste.

Consider donating items you don't need to local shelters and organizations so others can enjoy your items. This can even become a new family tradition.

Swap out incandescent holiday lights for LED versions.
