Tempe’s Valor on Eighth community already has a growing list of potential occupants as leasing of space designed for mixed use begins in December, according to a press release.

Of 50 living units, 45 will be offered at inexpensive rental rates with preference given to U.S. veterans; while the remaining five will lease for combination living and working spaces.

The project, among the nation’s first affordable developments for veterans, was comprised of government, nonprofit and private entities. Working together, the city of Tempe, Arizona Department of Housing, Save the Family Foundation of Arizona, Gorman & Co. and others created the template that is coming to fruition.

“Tempe is really taking the lead here in being one of the first in the nation to really look at veteran families,” Gorman & Company’s Brian Swanton said in the release. “Our hope is to move veteran families out of more transitional living situations and provide them permanent supportive housing for as long as [needed].”

Once complete, the development will designate space for foundations and veteran-service agencies to provide services to residents and other veterans. Other amenities will include a computer lab, indoor recreation and a Head Start program in the common areas, the release said.

“Valor on Eighth has been one of the most collaborative, inspiring projects I have been privileged to help advance,” Robin Arredondo, Tempe’s vice mayor and an Army veteran, said in the release. “Veterans deserve our best as a grateful community. I look forward to seeing families living, playing, learning and thriving here very soon.”
