Gov. Doug Ducey will be named the Arizona Bioindustry Association’s (AZBio) Leader of the Year this month for his leadership and support of the state’s life-science industry.

Ducey will be honored Oct. 11 at the 2017 AZBio Awards ceremony in Phoenix where he will receive the Jon W. McGarity Arizona Bioscience Leader of the Year Award, according to a press release. The award is given to Arizonians who have shown outstanding leadership that has helped in the development of the state’s bioindustry and the advancement of bioscience in the state.

“Governor Ducey has led the way in developing plans to make strategic investments in our state that benefit our bioscience industry and all Arizonans,” AZBio President and CEO Joan Koerber-Walker said in a statement. “More importantly, thanks to the Governor’s ability to communicate the vision and to bring people together to work toward a shared goal, this vision is becoming reality.”

The ceremony is held during the state’s Bioscience Week to honor the state’s leading educators, innovators and companies.

“Arizona Governor Doug Ducey is an example of a leader who knows the importance of doing both,” the organization stated in its award announcement. “He is creating an environment where innovators and businesses can flourish by developing creative solutions to address challenges that leverage Arizona’s key resources.”
