100,000 Opportunities Initiative brings nationwide youth hiring campaign to Phoenix


Following 100,000 Opportunities Initiative’s successful premiere Opportunity Fair & Forum last month, the group today announced its plan to repeat the event in Phoenix on Oct. 30.

Committed to creating pathways to employment for young people, the organization held its first fair in Chicago earlier this summer. The coalition, now comprising 33 leading U.S. companies, continues to accelerate its nationwide effort to hire America’s opportunity youth – 16-24-year-olds who are not in school or employed.

While one in seven young adults neither works nor attends school nationwide, that figure is even higher in Phoenix. Of America’s 25 largest cities, Phoenix scores highest in youth disengagement—especially among African American, American Indian and Hispanic populations in Maricopa County.

“Phoenix is a strong indicator for the larger crisis facing our nation when it comes to engaging opportunity youth,” Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said. “While the statistics are sobering, our city is seeing a small but powerful groundswell of civic, community and elected leaders that are working hard to give youth in Phoenix the type of meaningful job and educational opportunities they deserve. The business leadership driving the 100,000 Opportunities Initiative will help take our city’s efforts to even greater heights and bring more attention to the magnitude of this issue and its impact on the rest of the country.”

Member corporations include CVS Health, Chipotle, Dominos, FedEx, Hilton Worldwide, Hyatt, JCPenney, JPMorgan Chase, Lyft, Macy’s, Mars, Microsoft, Nordstrom, Papa John’s, Pizza Hut, Prudential Financial Inc., Red Robin, Starbucks, Taco Bell, Target, T-Mobile, Teavana, Walgreens, Walmart and more.
