The Arizona Corporation Commission gave the go-ahead for project involving Union Pacific railroad crossing at I-10 and Ina Road.
The Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) recently authorized a Tucson railroad crossing upgrade beginning in autumn 2016 to level and widen the intersection at Interstate 10 and Ina Road to improve traffic patterns and ensure safety.
The at-grade Union Pacific railroad crossing at I-10 and Ina Road will be removed; the surface of I-10 will be adjusted to ground level; and the road will then be widened to become an eight-lane thoroughfare.
Subsequently, Ina Road will be raised to conform to a reconstructed traffic pattern, crossing over Caminio de Oeste, the tracks and I-10. Ina Road will be reconstructed as a six-lane roadway complete with turn lanes, bicycle lanes and sidewalks.
Eliminating the one-level crossing will relieve traffic congestion by removing conflict between train and vehicular traffic. The ACC said that vehicular traffic on Ina road will still have access to I-10.
The construction is part of a larger undertaking extending from east of Ruthrauff Road to east of Prince Road.
A portion of the $120-million dollar project will be funded by the Federal Highway Administration. The ACC anticipates that the project will take two years to complete.
