CORRECTED: Agreement on solar facility to extend green footprint in Arizona

The Arizona Corporation Commission approved a plan that adds a solar plant at Red Rock.

The Arizona Corporation Commission recently approved an agreement under which a bigger amount of renewable energy can be purchased by PayPal and Arizona State University.

The approval is part of a plan that will help the Arizona Public Service Company (APS) build a new solar photovoltaic power plant in Red Rock. The new plant will be an addition to the Saguaro Power Plant.

Arizona State University, which plays an important role in the research, education and implementation of sustainability, will be an investor in the solar facility and APS will be the facility's owner and operator.

With the start of construction being this month, the plant should be completed by the end of 2016, which will bring with it more clean power.

APS will be keeping records on the cost difference between the newly implemented sources and the overall revenue. Additionally, APS will be taking into account the costs of the new facility in the next rate case.

As per the agreement, ASU and PayPal will be purchasing the renewable energy from the plant.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified ASU as the owner and operator of the solar power plant.
