Tucson Electric Power is offering residential customers a discount on shade trees to help conserve water and energy.

Tucson Electric Power (TEP) said recently its is offering residential customers a discount on shade trees to help conserve water and energy through its Trees for You program.

The program allows residential customers to purchase up to three shade-providing, low-water trees for $5 per tree. Commercial customers can also purchase trees in 15 gallon pots for $15.

“In addition to adding beauty, trees help conserve energy by shading buildings, streets and cars and reducing the effects of urban heat islands,” TEP Trees for You Program Manager Jessica Vega said. “Trees also control stormwater runoff, soil erosion and wind and they improve air quality while providing a habitat for wildlife.”

TEP lowered the prices on the trees this year from the $8 it charged last year to make the program more accessible for more customers.

Trees can be ordered online at tep.com, and include velvet mesquite, pomegranate and pistachio. The trees come with phone support from Civano Nursery. The nursery can also deliver and plant the trees for an extra charge.

TEP officials estimated that customers participating in Trees for You and its other energy efficiency programs have saved enough electricity to provide power to 84,000 additional homes.
