City staffers with expertise in building safety, inspections and permits will present a class for Avondale residents on May 16.

The program will run from 6-7:30 p.m. at Avondale City Hall’s Sonoran Conference Room, 11465 W. Civic Center Drive.

The city of Avondale’s Development & Engineering Services Department will offer city-sponsored educational materials on general building permits and information on specific projects such as covered patios, additions, electrical safety and garage or carport construction, according to an announcement.

The workshop coincides with May’s designation as National Building and Safety Month. The monthlong campaign is intended to clearly inform businesses and individuals about reasons and regulations concerning building safety, as well as lend a perspective on planning structures that are sustainable.

National Building Safety Month has been sponsored in the U.S. for the past several years by the International Code Council (ICC) to bring greater public awareness to residents everywhere. All 50 states plus the District of Columbia have adopted the ICC’s “I-Codes.”

The event is limited to 25 people. To attend, email bharris@avondale.org or call 623-333-4027.
