Artisanal breads and pastries by wholesaler City Bakery are now manufactured at the Denver-based company’s newest outlet in Mesa, a location specifically chosen by the company’s owners.

Mesa Mayor John Giles is "proud" of City Bakery’s conscious selection of Mesa when locating its operation.

"We have fostered a business friendly environment for companies big and small here in Mesa," Giles said in a press release. "City Bakery is from Denver and they had a choice when selecting their next location and I am proud that they chose Mesa."

Councilmember Ryan Winkle said that he was “thrilled to welcome City Bakery to District 3 and the City of Mesa."

Established in Denver 10 years ago by third-generation chocolatier Michael Bortz, City Bakery was previously voted Best Bakery in Denver by Westword magazine as well as Best Dessert provider by Zagat.

Bortz, who previously worked as a baker in Scottsdale, found the area so much to his liking that he and co-owners Lisa Yacuzzo and Jung Kim chose the greater Phoenix area for expansion.

"We're excited to have the opportunity to provide great artisan breads and desserts to restaurants in Mesa and the greater Phoenix area," Bortz said. “I worked for years in Scottsdale as Executive Baker for Paradise and love this community.”
