The city of Surprise is working to fill a vacant District 3 (Mesquite) councilmember seat and is accepting applications from residents interested in filling the post for the remainder of the four-year term.

The District 3 seat was open due to the recent resignation of Councilman John Williams. The term for the councilmember seat will expire on Dec. 31, 2018, with the remainder of the four-year term being placed on the next council election in August 2018, according to an announcement.

Residents interested in being considered for the District 3 seat appointment must reside within the district’s boundaries and submit an application to the City Clerk’s office by the close of the acceptance period at 5 p.m. Aug. 30.

The City Clerk will then turn over applications of eligible candidates to the City Council, which will be posted on the city’s website.

The City Council will then hold a public hearing Sept. 5 to interview each candidate. Public comments may be made at the hearing or submitted to the City Clerk by the end of the business day on Sept. 12. The district candidate will be selected no later than Sept. 19.

Applications for the district councilmember seat are available at the City Clerk’s office from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. or online at www.surpriseaz.gov
