Environmental entities Salt River Project and Valley Permaculture Alliance are collaborating on a sustainability workshop on Oct. 14 at Avondale City Hall.

Two SRP Shade Tree Workshop sessions are slated: from 8-9:15 a.m. and from 10-11:15 a.m.

By learning about tree placement, planting and maintenance strategies, homeowners can lower cooling expenses and heighten air quality. Each participant will be eligible to receive two free desert-viable saplings to plant at home after the workshop conclusion.

The young trees will be approximately 4-6 feet tall and should be planted within 15 feet of outer walls on the south, west or east sides of a residence.

SRP offers six tree varieties: native mesquite, thornless mesquite, palo verde, thornless palo verde, desert willow and willow acacia.

City Hall is at 11465 W. Civic Center Drive, Avondale. SRP serves the Phoenix metropolitan area as an electrical utility.

There is no fee to participate but interested parties must pre-register.
