The City of Maricopa has received statewide recognition for its Shop Local Copa Bingo! campaign 2016 by the Arizona Association for Economic Development (AAED).

The city has been awarded the AAED’s Golden Prospector Award of Merit for Multimedia Promotion for its video featuring Mayor Christian Price and Vice Mayor Marvin Brown, which was part of the Shop Local Copa Bingo! Campaign. The video titled “We Will Shop You,” featured Price and Brown singing to Queen’s “We Will Rock You” tune in carpool karaoke style.

“Each year the department works collaboratively to identify a campaign that equally engages the residents and business community and Copa Bingo! was a win-win for all,” Maricopa economic development director Denise Airheart said in a press release. “We found it was easy to play and most importantly encouraged support of the local economy.”

The Shop Local Copa Bingo! Campaign, now in its second year, involves residents taking their bingo cards around the city where local retailers and service providers stamp an icon on the card. Once the resident has bingo on the card, they can turn it in for the chance to win weekly prizes including a grand prize of a $250 gift card which will e given out at the end of the campaign.

According to the city, research shows that out of every $100 spent at locally owned businesses, $73 stays in the community.
