The Tucson Metro Chamber Board of Directors has endorsed the Pima County Sales Tax Advisory Committee's recommendation of offsetting a ½-cent sales tax increase for roadway maintenance with a reduction in property taxes.

The recommendation was for 10 years and Amber Smith, the Tucson Metro Chamber's president and CEO, has worked with the county to identify roadways in the county needing immediate repairs.

The chamber also added that the lack of maintenance of the roadways is adversely impacting Pima County's economic growth by disrupting overall business development. Chamber officials also believe high property taxes slow business activities.

The proposed extension of the ½-cent sales tax would allow for a 25 percent reduction in the property tax rate.
