In an effort to fill the shelves of local food banks, Avondale Public Library will accept non-perishable food items in exchange for fines through its Food for Fines program.

In exchange for every non-expired and undamaged food item, patrons' fines will be reduced by $1 with the maximum amount deducted $50.

No homemade foods will be accepted; and the program does not include replacement fees for lost or damaged materials, collection agency fees, printing or processing fees, card replacement fees, or future overdue fines.

The program runs through May 31, and will be held at the Avondale Civic Center Library, 11350 W. Civic Center Drive, and the Sam Garcia Western Avenue Library, 495 E. Western Ave.
