Pima County issued the following announcement on April 5.

Downtown Tucson will offer more affordable housing options come mid-April with the opening of the new Marist on Cathedral Squareproject. Funded in part by Pima County General Obligation Bonds, the senior living community on Church Avenue south of Broadway Boulevard was developed by the Foundation for Senior Living.

Pima County Board of Supervisors Chairman Richard Elías (District 5) will join Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and other dignitaries for a dedication ceremony Thursday, April 11 at 10 a.m. at The Marist, 235 S. Church Ave. Media members may attend and tour the facilities.

“This project preserves the historic and architecturally significant Marist College building, the only three-story adobe structure in Arizona, and provides our community with 83 units of much-needed affordable senior housing downtown.” Elías said. “We are proud that Pima County had an important role in the success of this project.”

The $25 million project was funded by Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco Affordable Housing Program (AHP), the Rio Nuevo Tax Increment Finance District and Pima County G.O. Bonds. The County's involvement also helped the project qualify for major tax credit funding from the state Department of Housing.

“We’re very excited to be opening the Marist at Cathedral Square,” said Steve Hastings, chief of real estate services, FSL. “The Marist is part of a larger effort to transform the area with beautiful buildings and pedestrian-friendly walks. We look forward to welcoming our residents and appreciate our partners on this project.”

The Marist features spacious one and two bedroom units between 630 and 875 square feet, eight built into the second and third floors of the former Catholic school on the corner of Church and Ochoa Street and another 75 apartments in a new seven-story mid-rise, 111 S. Church Ave built on the footprint of the Diocese of Tucson's office building. All utilities except cable and phone are included in rent. Residents will enjoy free amenities like an intercom system, security system, laundry facilities, a computer center, a spacious community room with a full kitchen, fitness room, and community space on the roof top.

Residents can also participate in free activities like a financial literacy classes, computer training, health promotion and disease prevention, wellness classes, blood pressure/health screenings and a food pantry.

The Marist is a smoke-free property and does have some resident parking on site. Access to the Sun Link Streetcar and other public transportation is conveniently located right next to the property.
