Office of the Arizona Governor Doug Ducey issued the following announcement on Jan. 10.

Governor Doug Ducey today announced the appointment of Robert Brooks to the Maricopa County Superior Court. This appointment fills the vacancy created by the appointment of Judge David B. Gass to Division I of the Arizona Court of Appeals.

Robert Brooks has been with the United States Attorney’s Office since 2014, where he currently prosecutes crimes in the Violent Crimes Section, including bank robbery, gang-related offenses and major felonies occurring on Native American reservations. In 2017, he received the FBI Award for Professional Excellence, Outstanding Leadership, Contributions and Successes in Prosecuting Bank Robberies.

In addition, Robert serves as one of two human trafficking coordinators for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, in which he prosecutes sex and labor trafficking cases and coordinates with law enforcement and service providers to provide resources to survivors.

Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Robert was an Arizona Assistant Attorney General in the Protective Service Section where he represented the Arizona Department of Child Safety in all phases of dependency litigation. Before joining the public sector, he was an associate at Osborn Maledon, focusing on complex commercial transactions.

Robert started his legal career by volunteering for a year in Bangalore, India with International Justice Mission, where he actively investigated and prosecuted cases of bonded labor and child labor, worked to rescue victims and assisted with providing services to rescued victims.

Robert also performed pro bono work as a court appointed advisor through the Children’s Law Center of the Volunteer Lawyers Program, in which he assisted Family Court Judges by meeting with parents and children in custody disputes and providing the Court with written recommendations or in-person testimony. He received the Children’s Law Center Court Appointed Advisor of the Year award in 2012. That same year, he was also named a Top 50 Pro Bono Attorney by the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education.

“Robert’s dedication to the community, including some of the most vulnerable populations, will bring a unique perspective to the bench,” said Governor Ducey. “I am pleased to appoint Robert to the Maricopa County Superior Court.”

Robert graduated magna cum laude from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and a minor in Religious Studies. He then received his law degree with honors from the University of Chicago.
